Tricky subject! Sooo many aspects to consider and we never know where to start but fear not! We’re here now. With the ultimate guide!
The trick is to tackle this matter one step at a time, without missing any! (Or, if you don’t want to bother with steps, go directly to step 6 for our go-to chairs). So where do we start? Follow the guide:
1) The room flow
The very first thing to think about is the fact that your armchair is going to be in a room (duh!). So always remember that not just any armchair will do, no matter how much you like it! Think about your room flow : how you move about in your space, what way you take to go from your living room to your kitchen for example. There is nothing (ish) more annoying than having furniture in your way and having to go around them. Definite 1st world problem right there and very bad juju (that’s a technical feng shui term (no it isn’t really)). So before you choose your armchair, think floorplan!
2) The size and proportions
Now that you know where you will put your armchair, how huge/tiny can it really be? Back to the floorplan it is! Have a look at the maximum dimensions you can allow for it/them without disturbing your flow. And note this step is not only about making sure your chair isn’t too big; too small can also be a problem as a very small armchair will look out of proportions in your room. Ain’t nobody want that! And, on that same point, it is vital to measure the height of your chair to make sure it will not obstruct your view or otherwise completely distract from the rest of your room, unless that’s what you want of course (more on this in step 5).
3) Your lifestyle
Whether you live alone or not, you have to think about who or how your armchair will be used. Let’s say you have a dog, a cat or an alligator, it might be best to go for heavy duty fabric that can easily be washed and maintained, perhaps a removable cover even. This can also dictate the colour you go for : let’s just say white and muddy dogs don’t tend to agree... The same goes if you have children (which really are like pets right?) or if you host lots of crazy parties! What you are going to be using your chair for should also influence your choice : if you like to curl up and read a book on Sunday afternoons, make sure you get a comfy chair as a modern, non-upholstered one may look good but will not be right for you.
4) The style
We will of course not go into every style possible, the important point here is that you need to match the style of your new armchair to the general style of your room (duh again). And if you’re planning a whole room makeover and want to change style completely, have a look at some of our trend suggestions on Hutsly. Or just go for one of these styles:
a) Super natural
c) Miami Beach
5) The parti pris
This is our favourite part! This is where you can get really creative and pretend you’re an Interior Designer. Let’s take a look at what we could do:
a) Go for statement
You are the Queen/King of your domain. Own it and choose a throne-like armchair with a tall wingback. Or go for a really stand out piece, something that couldn’t blend in if it tried, something like this:
b) Go for symmetry
I will happily admit that I have an OCD-like attitude to furniture : anything like side tables, stools or indeed chairs, have to come in a pair of identical pieces for my brain to feel at peace. Harmony is key here! And there is something so luxurious about it too! Some of these would be perfect for that:
c) Go eclectic
Exactly opposite the spectrum from the above parti pris, you could mix and match patterns and colours in a similar style for a more free-spirited interior. This works very well with styles like Boho/Gypsy or for an eclectic loft. How about some of these armchairs:
d) Go coordinated
If your living room, bedroom is already well-designed and based on a specific colour palette, you may decide that you want to go for an armchair in a matching tone. A pastel theme for example or an all-white, boudoir-like room. Our Anna chairs would be perfect for that as they come in no less than 6 colours:
6) The go-to chairs
Still unsure what to do? Don’t worry about it! There are some go-to chairs that will tick all the right boxes. They are not too small or too big, stylish but not boring, and all-round no brainers! You can’t go wrong with any of these:
7) The budget
Can you put a price on comfort or style? How dare you!
